Update of Airway Management in ICU
Airway management consists of the fundamental skill sets and basic cardiopulmonary physiology. Airway management plays a very important part of role for health care providers in acute care medicine. The objectives of this presentation include (1) the historical perspectives of the airway management (2) current advances in airway management (3) various case scenarios in airway management with the understanding of peri-intubation cardiopulmonary responses. Special interests on Video-Assisted Direct Laryngoscopy intubation and application of lung ultrasonography in airway management, especially in ICU or ED, will be discussed. Video-Assisted Direct Laryngoscopy has replaced most of the awake fiber-optic intubation. VADL provides a better way of learning and teaching endotracheal intubation and is more efficient in endotracheal intubation by experienced providers. These were ultimately playing a major role in the airway management in ICU during COVID pandemic at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. Recently, the utility of lung ultrasonography has gained enormous popularity during peri-intubation of acute care medicine. These progressive advances will also be presented for references and discussion.
